As I’m led in my bed, macbook in hand, feeling like I’ve survived a run in with an arctic lorry, I thought it would be a perfect time to reflect on yesterday’s epic antics at Tough Mudder South West.
For the past three or so months, a large group of us led by the guys at Synergi Fitness, had been getting into shape in order to complete the famed Tough Mudder course in aid of the local Penny Brohn cancer charity.
At 06:00 yesterday, my alarm went off as I hauled myself out of bed whilst trying to muster up the motivation to take on the challenge ahead. I have to admit, I felt like pressing the snooze button and going back to sleep.
Of course, that’s not what I did and a few hours later, I and the rest of Team Synergi were assembling in the stunning surroundings of Glanusk Estate in Wales, preparing for the plethora of body breaking obstacles ahead.
The course was about 11.5 miles of grassy parkland, rivers, and steep wooded climbs, peppered with obstacles that confined, froze and shocked your body.
The Arctic Enema lived up to it’s name, provoking a survival response as the icy water engulfed me, whilst the Electric Eel left me screaming like a grown man shouldn’t!
Just under three hours later, I’d survived the final obstacle, Electroshock Therapy (as if the Electric Eel wasn’t enough..), claimed my iconic orange headband and began to ease some of the pain my body was in with a refreshing cider.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience as a mixture of a mental & physical challenge combined with the camaraderie you found on every obstacle you attempt. Although today I do look like I’ve taken a grenade to the body!
I’m going to upload a video edit of the days antics as soon as I get some time to edit the footage I took on my GoPro, so keep an eye out for that!
